York & Cindy – Na-Nu Na-Nu!
Ah, memories of rainbow-suspendered, hairy-chested aliens from Ork are all rushing back to me….. Oh, sorry. Got a little distracted there. Let’s get back to the purpose of this post – our trip to York yesterday.
Yesterday, after three months of talking about it, we finally headed to York for the day. The forecast was for sun and 9 degrees and so we hopped on the train around 11 in the morning, meeting up with our friends Sarah and Jamie who got on the stop before us; it wasn’t a coincidence – we planned it that way. The train was quite busy heading to York and it could have been for several reasons – the weather, it’s half-term for schoolkids or the viking festival going on. Who knows what was drawing the crowds, but we joined the herd, and less than half an hour later we were in York. It was obvious that everyone on the train wasn’t simply transferring to other trains at York station as the city center was packed!
So, now off the train and in the sun, we headed to York Minster where I managed to get a couple of photographs. The minster is huge, and it made me quickly realize that I want a wide angle 10-20mm lens for my camera. We were thinking of heading up the towers to get an awesome view of the town and to take some shots but the crowd of tourists was too much and so we headed to grab some lunch. Sarah and Jamie are York veterans, Jamie being a local, and they recommended an excellent Thai place. We filled ourselves up on some scrumptious Phad Thai, and the sort, and then headed back into the streets. We turned from tourists to shoppers and managed to visit every bookstore in the center of town I am sure – having a blast spending hours browsing books but buying nothing. Late in the afternoon we found a tiny coffee shop at the corner of The Shambles, Europe’s most visited street apparently, where we had some coffee and carrot cake. With the sun starting to dim, we made our way back towards the train station, walking along the wall built by the Romans and then heading into the park where I managed to catch a couple of sunset shots with the ruins along the river. With yet another day filled with walking coming to an end, we hopped on the train and headed home after stopping to get a bottle of wine and some cheese for dinner. A wonderful day spent with friends!
Here are a few of the shots I took. I wasn’t in a photog mood and the crowds were getting in my shots!
